PROCESSION
Video installation

3 minute animation

We get to choose to see the end as we want to. This is how I chose to remember that day.

Funerals tend to have a culmination about them. You sit, you pray, you get up and you walk to the burial ground, say your last goodbyes.

However, in Lebanon in muslim shiite tradition and religion, women are not allowed to walk with the men to the burial ground.

I longed to walk behind her coffin as I held my mother’s hand, but they did not permit it.

Alluring and seductive coffins hovering amongst a forest green of pine trees.

COFFEE BEAN
Video installation

3 minute video

In Lebanon as it may be in many traditions, women make and serve the coffee at a funeral.

Back at the village home during the funeral I stared down the overflowing pot of coffee into the black darkness of the ground beans, I wondered if that is where she is. The black pit. In the black coffee.

This installation is a simulation of a traditional Lebanese kitchen sink with traditional Lebanese coffee beans.

"Port de bras"

by Nadine Sures, performance artist

By reconstructing actions within repetitious structures, traditions and rituals are broken down in the body of the performer. These formal structures are deconstructed, dismounted and re-interpreted through gesture, movement, sound and narrative. Restrictions on multiple levels of the female body - spiritual, psychological and physical - transmute the boundaries of ethics and humanism; giving rise to innovations in the mapping out of the body within a ritual setting. The performer communicates these transmutations through variations in timing and space.
